Why do diets stop working after 50?

The old rules — eat less, move more — were written for a body that does not exist anymore after 50.

If you have ever said, 'I am doing everything I used to do and nothing is working,' you are telling the truth. Your body has changed. The diet has not.

Your metabolism is not broken

It is adapted. Years of restrictive dieting teach the body to protect itself by lowering its baseline burn rate. Add menopausal hormone shifts on top, and the same calorie cut that used to drop five pounds now drops nothing.

Muscle is the missing piece

After 35, women lose roughly 1 percent of muscle per year unless they actively rebuild it. Less muscle means a slower metabolism, weaker insulin response, and more fat storage. Most diets accelerate that loss instead of preventing it.

What to do instead

Eat enough protein to rebuild muscle. Lift heavy enough to challenge it. Stop fearing food and start using it to send the right hormone signals. The goal is not a smaller plate — it is a stronger system.
